What is Tensile Structure? 

According to Wikipedia “Tensile Structures” are construction of elements carrying only tension regardless compression or bending. Tensile structures are most commonly types of thin layered structures.

How does Tensile Structures Work?

In tensile structure gravity & rigidity are not available as the critical part of structural properties, for they are so light and their components are often flexible. Therefore to gain stability & strength, their components are required to arrange in a specific geometric form, while being subjected to a specific pattern of Internal Stresses.

E.g., take out a handkerchief and let two person hold four corners. Pull it fairly hard on all four corners. This structure cannot take any load in the center without sagging. Now bring two diagonally opposite corners to ground as if you are pegging them to your table keeping the other two corners at the same height and with the same tension or pull. This forms a very stable 'saddle' structure that can take live loads like wind or snow and support self weight without any sagging whatsoever. All areas of the fabric are now under tension. If you were to draw two lines on this surface across the two corners, they will have opposite curvature: one positive and the other negative.
